Lunenburg, MAAll About Lunenburg, MA

Lunenburg, MA might be a small town, but it’s been incorporated as a town for nearly fifty years longer than the US has been a country! It was first settled by Europeans in 1718 and incorporated a decade later, named after a title of King George II of Great Britain, who was also called the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg. The town was raided during King George’s War.

Parts of Fitchburg were originally part of Lunenburg that broke away in 1764, because settlers with a long walk to the church and town meetings wanted their own town center closer to them.

For much of the 20th century, Lunenburg was home to Whalom Park, an amusement park of Flyer Comet fame, but it couldn’t keep up with the competition of the popular Six Flags New England in Agawam and closed in 2000. The site is now a lakeside neighborhood.

Experience What Lunenburg Has to Offer!

Lunenburg, being small enough to be officially classified as a “town” rather than a city, might not be a hopping tourist scene, but there are some lovely things to do in the area without having to go to a neighboring town. One that we would recommend the family-owned and operated Lakeview Driving Range, an 18-hole miniature golf course, driving range, and batting range. It’s a great place to have a birthday party or just to spend a lazy afternoon with family and friends!

If you want some delicious local food to go with your mini-golf game, check out Ixtapa Mexican Cantina on Massachusetts Ave. Their food is delicious, with generous portion sizes. You’ll love menu items like the Nachos Supreme and the Ixtapa burrito.

If you are looking for fun things to do near Lunenburg but not within the town limits, the Fitchburg Art Museum would be a great option. It’s been around since 1925 and is a real local hidden gem. There’s an excellent Egypt exhibit and African/Oceanic art exhibits. There are opportunities to meet the artists behind some of the modern pieces, and guided tours provide great insight into artists’ creative processes and ideas.
